Players can have special traits that give them unique abilities during matches. Some are positive, some are negative, and some are earned through loyalty. Traits can influence how effective a player is depending on your tactics, their role, and the match referee.
Hard Trainer
Gains extra form after every match and develops faster over a season. One of the most valuable traits for long-term player growth.
Leader
As captain: strengthens all defence zones and dampens the opponent's momentum boost after conceding. As a non captain leader: each additional leader on the pitch adds a small boost to defence and midfield zones. Multiple leaders compound, so a squad full of leaders is harder to break down even when the captain isn't on the ball. Big impact.
Intelligent
Reads the game from any role. As Playmaker: significant chance quality bonus, plus extra effectiveness versus packed defences. As a Centre Back or fullback: smarter marking reduces the opponent's chance quality, and a higher rated in-form defender contributes more than a tired backup with the same trait. As a Goalkeeper: same rating-aware contribution to protecting the area. Multiple intelligent defenders compound up to a cap. Big impact.
Composed
Stays calm under pressure. Three effects. First, improves goal conversion when scoring while the team is losing. Second, boosts penalty conversion. Third, press resistance: composed centre backs and midfielders reduce the effectiveness of the opponent's gegenpress. Stack enough composed defenders and you can neutralise pressing teams entirely. Big impact.
Poacher
Noticeably better at converting high quality chances. The classic fox in the box: Inzaghi, Suárez, Müller. Best suited for strikers who are regularly on the end of attacks. Generated only on forwards and midfielders. Moderate impact.
Aerial King
Dominant in the air. Significantly more dangerous on headers and even more so from corners, where they are far more likely to be the one finishing the chance. On a defender or goalkeeper, the trait cancels the opponent attacker's aerial bonus, turning the duel into a 50/50. Big impact on set pieces.
Clinical Header
Noticeably better at converting header chances, regardless of which strategy you play. Pairs perfectly with Aerial King: one finds the chance, the other finishes it. Moderate impact.
Fast
More likely to be on the end of wing attacks. Ideal for wide forwards and wingers who can exploit space on the flanks. Moderate impact.
Power Shot
Two effects. First, significantly better goal conversion when your team uses the Long Shots offensive strategy. Second, a meaningful bonus to free kick conversion. Stacks with the Free Kick specialist trait if both are on the same player. Big impact for long range threats.
Positioning
Two effects. First, more likely to be in the right place at the right time, meaning they get on the end of more chances than teammates. Second, a small goal conversion bonus when they are the chosen scorer. Stacks with poacher, clinical header, composed, and aerial king. Moderate impact.
Free Kick
When designated as the team's free kick taker, dramatically improves free kick conversion. Combined with Power Shot on the same player, free kicks become a serious goal threat. Big impact on set pieces.
Versatile
Heavily reduces the penalty for playing out of position. In an adjacent position the player keeps 90% of their rating, compared to 60% without the trait. In a far position they keep 80%, compared to 20%. Does not apply when the slot is goalkeeper, since an outfield trait cannot fake a competent keeper. Lets you cover injuries and tactical shifts with almost no drop. High impact.
Engine
Significantly less fatigue during a match. Especially valuable for older players who tire more quickly, and for key players you need performing at full intensity for the entire 90 minutes. Big impact on endurance.
Long Pass
Distribution specialists who can ping accurate balls forward over distance. Pirlo, Beckenbauer, modern playing out goalkeepers. Each long pass distributor in the starting XI improves the quality of Direct Play attacks. Multiple distributors compound up to a cap. Generated only on goalkeepers, defenders, and midfielders. Moderate impact for Direct Play teams.
Strength
Physical presence that works differently based on position. On defenders and goalkeepers: reduces opponent chance quality, with higher rated in-form defenders contributing more than fringe players carrying the same trait. Multiple strength centre backs compound up to a cap for a strong defensive wall. The Van Dijk, Maguire, Mings archetype. On forwards: provides hold up play when your team plays Direct Play or Counter Attack, improving the quality of every attack. The Drogba, Giroud, Lukaku archetype. Pairs perfectly with long pass distributors at the back. Big impact.
Flair
The trickster on the ball. Carries threat in tight spaces, beats defenders with improvisation, and lifts chance creation in the final third. The Ronaldinho, Neymar, Riquelme archetype. Outfield only and rare, so a squad with multiple flair players is naturally an attacking squad. The signature trait of the Jogo Bonito philosophy: flair forwards finish, flair midfielders create. Big impact for Jogo Bonito teams, modest impact otherwise.
These traits are exclusive to goalkeepers. Note that goalkeepers can also have Aerial King, Intelligent, Composed, and Leader from the positive traits above.
Reflexes
Two effects. In open play, reads and halves the goal boost a Power Shot shooter would otherwise get from the Long Shots strategy. On penalties, a clear save boost against spot kicks. Moderate impact, big against the cannon-ball archetype.
One on Ones
Makes better saves when facing attackers through on goal, reducing the chance of goals from big chances and close range chances. Moderate impact.
Ball Playing
Great for playing out from the back. When your team plays Tiki Taka, this GK strengthens your midfield as the keeper becomes an extra passing option in buildup play. Big impact for Tiki Taka teams.
Sweeper Keeper
Comes off the line to sweep up through balls and runs in behind. Noticeably reduces the danger of big chances. Essential against teams playing Counter Attack or Direct Play. Moderate impact.
Reckless
Commits fouls more often and is more likely to give away free kicks. When combined with an aggressive playing style and a high-rated referee, there is a real risk of a straight red card.
Big Mouth
More likely to pick up yellow cards, especially when the referee is strict. Can lead to suspensions that leave you short for important matches. Also counts as a "cunning" player for the Dark Arts team-talk toggle.
Inconsistent
Form swings wildly after matches. Sometimes gaining a big boost, sometimes dropping sharply. Unpredictable and hard to rely on consistently.
Diva
Weakens your attacking zones when the team is losing. Can make comebacks harder if you fall behind.
Injury Prone
Has a higher chance of picking up an injury when fouled. Risky to rely on for every match, especially against aggressive opponents.
Diver
Can win free kicks in dangerous areas by fooling low-rated referees. However, high-rated referees will see through the act. A double-edged trait that depends on the match official. Counts as a "cunning" player for the Dark Arts team-talk toggle, where it scales the boon and the backfire.
Loyalty traits are earned, not assigned at creation. The longer a player stays at your club, the more attached they become. If a player is transferred to another club, their loyalty traits are reset and must be earned again.
Club Feelings
Earned after a player plays 10 competitive matches for your club.
Club Legend
Earned after a player reaches 100 competitive appearances. A badge of honour for your longest-serving players.
